Josh Warrington: ‘I could die a happy man’ after IBF title win

This past Saturday at home in Leeds, Josh Warrington overcame Lee Selby to win the IBF featherweight title in front of his fans, and the 27-year-old is understandably over the moon about the victory.

“I could die a happy man, I really could. How do you top that? Anything’s possible. … I was doubted at English level, I was doubted at British level, I wasn’t meant to go any further than that. But I outboxed, outfoxed and outsmarted a brilliant champion in Lee Selby.”

As for what’s next, Warrington (27-0, 6 KO) has heard the calls for Carl Frampton, but isn’t sure that should be his first defense:

“Carl Frampton keeps on getting mentioned but Windsor Park might be a little bit too soon, we’ll have to see about that. I wouldn’t mind going back to the Leeds Arena, have another nutty night there, defend the title and then possibly see about fighting Carl after that.”

As much as fans might not like it, putting off a Warrington-Frampton matchup for the time being might be the right call financially, to make it even bigger than it would be right now. A “victory lap” sort of first defense might be in the cards first.
