Over three years after their record-breaking and wholly disappointing mega-fight, Manny Pacquiao still wants a rematch with Floyd Mayweather:
“Mayweather? If he decides to go back to boxing then that is the time we are going to call the shots. I have the belt, so it’s up to him. If he wants to come back in boxing let’s do a second one.”
First of all, Pacquiao does not have “the” belt. He doesn’t even have “the” belt of the sanctioning body that controls the belt he has. Pacquiao holds the WBA “world” welterweight title. Keith Thurman is the “super world” champion, and then there’s Errol Spence Jr (IBF), Terence Crawford (WBO), and the vacant WBC title.
Second of all, and I think I probably speak for a lot of people here if certainly not all: uh, no thanks. Hard pass on a 40-year-old Pacquiao fighting a retired, 42-year-old Floyd Mayweather. The first fight told me enough, and it’s not like either of them has gotten better since then.
But if you wanna see it, hey, that’s you, blessings be upon you and whatnot.
Let’s say they did run it back in 2019, though. What kind of pay-per-view numbers do you think they’d do? I’m not saying it wouldn’t be a hit, it would be, everyone would make good money, but how high do you think that ceiling is at this point?
