Completing a remarkable transition from world kickboxing star to regional boxing champion, Victor Nagbe won the WBC Australasia Super Welterweight Championship in Melbourne, Australia, on 10 July.

Undefeated Nagbe beat Australia’s fighting legend Sam Soliman (46 wins 15 loses) with a unanimous points decision at the Melbourne Pavilion.

Southpaw Nagbe displayed sustained aggression with precision punches to outclass his experienced opponent – winning the contest convincingly on points 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94.

The sold-out contest by Punisher promotions (Phil Eglezos, Pierre Karma, and Peter Maniatis) resulted from an enormous interest in professional boxing in the southern Australian capital city that had come out of 9 months COVID-19 lockdown.

Renowned for his fighting spirit in China, Nagbe said he would defend his Australasia title in an Australian before looking at international opportunities when airlines resumed flights between Asian countries and Australia/New Zealand.

Nagbe said he is fully focused on taking his boxing career to the highest level.

An Australian resident of Liberian descent, Nagbe had beaten some of the best professionals in stand-up martial arts including WBC Muaythai. He declined an “open door” to the UFC and, instead, welcomed the challenge of making an impact on the world stage of professional boxing.

“I’m young enough (27 years old) to make it as a top-ranked professional boxer.”
