The Rio de Janeiro Olympics are not yet over but already the first boxer from the tournament has signed a professional contract.

Hasanboy Dusmatov, 23, of Uzbekistan, won the light flyweight gold medal last Sunday, the first boxing gold handed out in Rio, and on Friday he signed a promotional agreement with South African promoter Rodney Berman’s Golden Gloves.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“You watch this kid and can’t believe how good he is,” Berman said. “Gennady Golovkin charted the course for Eastern Europeans becoming superstars in the West. We intend to do the same with Hasanboy, who is also charismatic and just a tremendous boxer. He isn’t amateur in the traditional sense, but a completely rounded boxer.”

Berman said Dusmatov’s professional debut is being planned for December in South Africa with at least three more fights in 2017.

Dusmatov, a southpaw, is the second Olympic gold medalist in boxing from Uzbekistan along with 2000 light welterweight Olympic champion Muhammad Abdullaev, who beat Miguel Cotto on his way to gold.

On his way to the gold medal, Dusmatov won all four of his bouts by unanimous decision in Rio, including against American Nico Hernandez in the semifinals and Yurberjen Herney Martinez, of Cuba, in the final.

“Thirty million people were waiting for this moment,” Dusmatov said after winning gold. “Uzbekistan, I love you!”

If Dusmatov develops the way many believe, he will not lack for opposition in South Africa, where the boxing scene is loaded with junior flyweight and flyweights for him to compete against.

Berman says he believes Dusmatov will probably move up in weight to flyweight before too long.

“We’ve worked with Kazakh fighters in the past, so this isn’t entirely new,” Berman said, adding that it must still be worked out when and where Dusmatov would train for his fights.
