One day like today, Gilberto Román successfully defended his WBC title in Japan

July 9th, 1988.- Mexican Gilberto Román defended his World Boxing Council super flyweight title, by TKO over Japan’s  Yoshiyuki in 5 rounds.

It was at the City Gymnasium, in the city of Kawagoe, Japan, starting very competitively,  with both fighters trying to impose their will. In the fourth episode, Yoshiyuki surprised Román by sending him to the canvas, but with his superb condition, he was able to recover well. Then at the beginning of fifth-round Román, returned the compliment sending Uchida to the canvass. The Japanese fighter showed great heart getting up, only to be punished again by Roman, forcing referee Richard Steele to stop the fight.

That was Román’s first defense of the WBC title, in his second term as world champion.
