Super bantamweight contender Rico “El Suavecito” Ramos knows what it feels to be a champion, and now he is making a move to get back to the top after winning five consecutive fights. The Southern California native will take his most important step towards that goal when he takes on former world-champion Jesse Magdaleno on Friday September 28 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
Ramos (29-5, 14 Kos), 31, of Los Angeles, California won the World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight championship on July 9, 2011 by stopping Akifumi Shimoda in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but lost the belt to former Olympian gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux in his first defense on January 20, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ramos current five-fight winning streak includes wins over Erik Ruiz on March 11 2017 in Las Vegas over Juan Antonio Lopez on July 15, 2017 both in Arizona and his victory over Lopez earned him the WBA-NABA Super Bantamweight title and in his last fight in April 28 in Phoenix, Arizona he beat Christian Esquivel, Ramos is currently ranked #13 by the WBA at 122 pounds.
Ramos and his manager Jimmy Karambelas believe that this opportunity against Magdaleno will propel him to a world title fight. The fight is a 10 round bout at a catch weight of 124 pounds, and it will mark the return of Magdaleno (25-1) to the ring since losing this title and suffering his first loss as a professional on April 28 in Philadelphia.
“Since we started working together our goal was no less than a world title. This was all about Rico working his way back to relevancy and the team’s hard work along with Top Rank Boxing have made these all possible,” Said Karamelas.
Ramos has been training at the Maywood Gym in Maywood, California under the tutelage of Raquet Flores for the fight and will be well prepared to take on Magdaleno and get a much-needed win for his career.
The card is promoted by Top Rank and it will be streamed on ESPN+ on the same card that Jerwin Ancajas and Jose Uzcategui will making world title defenses.
