WBA super flyweight world champion Joshua Franco can’t wait to defend his title against Australian former belt-holder Andrew Moloney in a rematch battle set for November 14, likely at the MGM Grand Bubble in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Franco outpointed Moloney in their exciting first fight last June, fans wondering if the very same thing will happen again.. or will it be the other way around?
Moloney (21-1, 14 KO’s) of Melbourne, Australia, captured the interim title with a knockout win over Elton Dharry last November and was subsequently elevated to regular world champion.
However, in his first title defense on June 23 at the MGM Grand Bubble in Las Vegas, the Aussie was surprised with a unanimous decision loss at the hands of tough Joshua Franco (17-1-2, 8 KO’s), a native of San Antonio, Texas.
It was a competitive back-and-forth fight in which Franco scored a clean knockdown over Moloney in the 11th round.
That knockdown helped Franco defeated Moloney via 12-round unanimous decision to capture the WBA Regular title.
Interestingly, 2 judges scored the bout 114–113, while the 3rd one scored it 115–112.
That means that the 11th-round knockdown was the deciding factor in Franco’s victory; had he not scored the knockdown, Moloney would have retained his title through a majority draw.
This rematch is exciting for fans as both fighters want so bad to score the win.
Franco has a warrior heart and wants to retain his crown.
In fact, Franco has previously been known for his action-packed trilogy against nemesis Oscar Negrete; and is really anybody’s guess who will prevail on November 14.
About this 2nd battle, Moloney has said that he is excited and motivated about his rematch with Franco.
In addition, he has expressed to be grateful that Top Rank has given him the opportunity to get revenge and claim back his world title.
Franco vs Moloney is a supporting bout for the main event headlined by WBO Welterweight world champion Terence “Bud” Crawford defending crown against Briton challenger former titlist Kell Brook.
The show is promoted by Top Rank live on ESPN.
