HARDPUNCHING Jovany “The Miner” Rota of Davao City will now be fighting under the MB Northstar Promotions starting on November 25 at the UM Gym in Tagum City.
“Nakita ko kasi na may malaking potential itong si Rota dahil may lakas siya. Kaya kinuha naming siya,” (Because I saw a big potential on Rota because he has power that’s why we took him also) said boxing promoter Engr. Jilson Basang of MB Northstar Promotions.
Rota (9W-12L-0D, 6 KOs) is facing Alvin Makiling (10W-14L-4D, 3KOs) for the vacant Mindanao Professional Boxing Federation (MinProBA) lightweight (135 lbs.) title in the undercard of “The Redemption” boxing card of the RATIM Sports Promotion.
“Rota, if given a chance to train properly with a good manager, can still become a champion,” said Basang.
Rota has been training already at the Empire Boxing Gym in Davao City but will soon transfer for sparring seasons next week at the Barangay Una Gym in Panabo City under new trainer Rey Inocian, formerly from MP Davao Gym.
In his previous outing, Rota gave current Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) lightweight champion Rosekie “Kapre” Cristobal (14W-2L-0D, 10KOs) a good fight in their exciting and non-stop bout held last September 15 in Panabo.
“Muntik ng matalo ni Rota si Rosekie. Talagang pinahirapan ni Rota si Rosekie,” (Rota almost got lost to Rosekie. Rota really gave a hard time on Rosekie) said Basang.
Cristobal also first got a good beating from Makiling before he was able to bounce back to score a 6th round technical knockout in their battle for the vacant PBF lightweight crown last May 12 in Davao City.
Cristobal was first downed twice in Round 2 before he came back strong by knocking out Making in the 6th round.
“Magandang laban ito dahil my lakas din itong si Makiling. Siguradong my matutumba sa kanila ni Rota,” (This is a good fight because Makiling is also strong. It’s sure that somebody will get knockout) said Basang.
“The Redemption” is co-presented by the Tagum Cirque of Shooters Inc. and Maco Golden Valley Eagles Club.
“Proceeds will go to the adopted Gawad Kalinga village in Maco of the Eagles Club and the drug rehabilitation program of Tagum Cirque of Shooters, said co-promoter Raul Timogtimog of RATIM Sports Promotion.
The 29-year old Rota, who used to work for a mining company in Compostela Valley Province is now more inspired and serious in his boxing career.
Rota had just recently married a call center agent in Davao City. And they are blessed with a baby girl.
“Mahirap po kasi dati dahil wala akong manager. At mas inspired ako ngayon dahil sa aking baby,” (It’s hard before because I don’t have a manager. Now I’m more inspired because of my baby) said Rota.
Rota fought but lost for the Philippine super lightweight title to Adones Cabalquinto by a 6th round knockout in 2014. He also suffered a first round knockout when he challenged WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental welterweight champion Sirimongkhon Iamthuam in 2013 in Thailand.
In his first title fight, Rota was stopped in the first round only by defending Philippine lightweight champion Rey Labao also in 2013.
