The World Boxing Association (WBA) celebrated its 100th anniversary on Friday July 2nd with an online meeting where President Gilberto Jesús Mendoza and the whole WBA family were present. Different personalities, including champions and former champions, attended the celebration that lasted throughout the day and ended with the evening meeting.

During the course of the day, personalities such as Tyson Fury, Eddie Hearn, Seniesa Estrada, Josh Taylor, Juan Francisco Estrada, Yessica Bopp, Chris John, among others, sent their congratulations and thanks to the pioneer body for so many years of work since the first title sanction in 1921 when Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier faced each other.

During the meeting, promoters such as Sampson Lewkowicz, Ricardo Rizzo, and Bélgica Peña were present, along with former champions such as Anselmo Moreno, Celestino Caballero and Rosendo Álvarez. The celebration also included a speech by Mendoza, accompanied by words from those present.

It was also mentioned that this Saturday night’s fights will be historic as they will be the first ones after the centennial. Chris Colbert will defend his Interim Super Featherweight belt against Tugstsogt Nyambayar in Carson, while Michel Rivera and Jon Fernandez will meet in a WBA eliminator in the same category on a big day.

For the WBA it is an honor to reach 100 years working for boxing and this centennial marks the beginning of a new era in which we have to work much harder for boxing and its protagonists.
