Floyd Mayweather Jr. was constantly teasing a possible UFC bout a few months ago. While that could’ve been a ploy to test the waters and see if he can get a mammoth payday from Endeavor (formerly WME-IMG), talks of the switch seems to have died down a bit from his end.
Tyron Woodley though, is still discussing it, claiming that he’s still going to train Mayweather and it will be happening very soon. The UFC champion mentioned it on a recent Instagram live session.
“Yeah, I’m training Floyd. I just talked to Floyd. He was in Singapore (and) somewhere else,” Woodley said during a live Q&A with fans on social media. “I just talked to him a couple of days ago. So when he gets back in town next week, me and him are going to start training.”
Mayweather was vacationing and touring the world as of late. Apart from Singapore that Woodley mentioned, Floyd was also in the Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates.
He is currently in Canada to promote Badou Jack’s boxing match with Adonis Stevenson. While possibly training with Woodley suggests an MMA bout could happen, Mayweather himself said he has no plans of returning to competition.
“No, no, no,” Mayweather told Fight Hype when asked if he was coming back from retirement. “If I wanted to comeback, the billion dollar man can come back, make a few fights and a billion dollars is possible.”
When asked specifically about wanting to go 51-0 in boxing, he shut that down more firmly.
“We never know, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is my name, but I’m not coming back.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean he is or isn’t going to be working in the gym with Woodley, but it just seems highly unlikely at this point that the 41-year-old would actually ever compete in Mixed Martial Arts.
