UFC Austin results: Derrick Lewis rallies for knockout win over Marcin Tybura

Don’t sleep on Derrick Lewis for a second, or you might be the one going to sleep.

The popular Houston heavyweight nicknamed “The Black Beast” felt his UFC Austin co-main event against Poland’s Marcin Tybura on Sunday slipping away.

But then Lewis did what he does best: Using sheer willpower, not to mention the power in his fists, to overcome his limitations and win a fight. Lewis rained down heavy hands and finished Tybura via knockout at 2:48 of the third round.

“I just believed in myself,” Lewis said. “I knew I just had to touch him a few times. Those boys from Texas can hit, man.”

Lewis appeared to have Tybura all but finished in the opening round, as he dropped him with a big right cross and rained down heavy punches on the ground. The granite-chinned Tybura survived, though, and before the round was out, ended up in top position and dishing out offense of his own.

The second round was all Tybura, as he got a takedown and secured side control. Lewis’ attempt to escape ended up with him carrying Tybura’s weight for a considerable period of time.

Tybura had things going his way in the final round, as well, right up until Lewis went for broke in what turned out to be his fight-ending flurry.

With his 17th career KO/TKO victory, Lewis (19-5, 1 NC) has now won seven of his past eight fights. Tybura (16-4) has dropped two in a row.
