Former three-division titleholder Ricky Burns took a fight with Scotty Cardle on short notice, and it turned out to be a good decision by the veteran, as he stopped Cardle in the third round today in Manchester on the Usyk-Bellew card.

Burns, who had been set to return on Nov. 17 in Kansas, simply dominated Cardle, seemingly unable to miss with his right hand, which is what eventually sent Cardle to the canvas.

Cardle (23-3-1, 7 KO) got up, but referee Mark Lyson called a halt to the contest at 2:06 of the third round, giving Burns (43-7-1, 16 KO) a second straight victory following back-to-back losses to Julius Indongo and Anthony Crolla in 2017.

Burns spoke after the fight and as usual, didn’t call out anyone in particular or anything, but said that he wants something bigger in 2019, and with this sort of win over a solid domestic level fighter, that’s really all there is other than treading water. At 35, Burns still has a little left in the tank, and he and his team sound confident that he can still compete at a high level.
