Dominican boxing fans packed the Maunaloa Night Club and Casino in Santo Domingo for the end of the year boxing gala presented by three promoters. In the main event, former WBA light-heavyweight interim champion Felix “Mangu” Valera won a unanimous decision over Gusmyr Perdomo of Venezuela. WBA # 7 Valera (14-1, 12 KOs) built up a lead in the early rounds that the gritty Perdomo (22-7, 15 KOs), a former title contender, could not overcome. Valera tried too hard to score a knockout in a bout marred by too much holding and shoving. The scores were 98-92, 98-92, 97-93.

Valera said “This guy takes a good punch and is a southpaw. It was not an easy fight but the kind of fight you learn from.”

In other fights, WBC #7, WBO #13, WBO #14 welterweight Felix Diaz (19-1, 9 KOs) dominated Levis Morales (14-4-1, 7 KOs) of Nicaragua and forced a stoppage of the one-sided fray in the 7th round. Morales was given a round of applause for putting up a valiant stand. Diaz said “The kid was game and has a heck of a chin. In any case, it’s a good way to end the year.”

Dominican boxing’s new sensation, welterweight WBA #8 Carlos Adames (10-0, 9 KOs) retained his WBA Fedelatin title with a brutal knockout of John Renteria (14-4, 10 KOs) of Panama; fans watched in awe as Adames trapped Renteria in a corner and unloaded a barrage of punches that left the visitor prone on the mat. It was the first time that Renteria was stopped. With his crippling power and take-no prisoner style, Adames has the tools to become a favorite of American TV when he decides to invade the US scene.
