So yeah, turns out the WBA was just straight-up lying when it said it wanted to reduce the number of belts in play. It has upgraded this Saturday’s heavyweight bout between BJ Flores and Trevor Bryan to an interim title fight, citing the current litigation around the upcoming “regular” title fight between Manuel Charr and Fres Oquendo.
Never mind the fact that the “Super” title still exists and will be on the line when Anthony Joshua fights Alexander Povetkin next month.
Flores (34-3-1, 21 KO) lasted less than three rounds against Tony Bellew and his two wins since came against 26-18-1 Jeremy Bates and Nick Guivas, who is ranked #331 by BoxRec. Bryan’s (19-0, 13 KO) last two opponents had a combined 4-44 record.
The WBA has both of them ranked higher than Dillian Whyte and Kubrat Pulev.
Honestly, this wouldn’t be half as aggravating if GIlberto Mendoza and co. just up and said “we literally care about nothing except for sanctioning fees.” Better a bastard than a two-faced bastard.
