Bitch boxer – Fight in and out of the ring

By Fausto Ponce – THE ECONOMIST

Chloe is a 21-year-old on a mission. She is fascinated by boxing.  It is 2012 and the London Olympics are near.  An event that for the first time will include women’s boxing. In this context, Chloe prepares for the most important fight of her young life inside the ring, while at the self same time,  she must deal with the two men in her  life.

This is the premise of Charlotte Josephine’s Bitch Boxer, directed by Roberto Cavazos and starring Ana Lucia Robledo. The play is presented every Monday at the Shakespeare Forum.

“When I saw this play  in England I decided to bring her  to Mexico. She’s a girl who wants to be a boxer in a male world. It caught my attention as an actress and as a person.  I admired  its message. It is a story that everyone can understand. In Mexico women’s boxing is very popular and we are one of the countries with the best boxers in the world, “says Ana Lucía,  who is also a producer.

In this play the original text is respected. Everything develops in England, but for the construction of the character, Ana Lucía tells that they had to think about a a CDMX neighborhood equivalent to a  neighborhood of London where Chloe lives, so the people in Mexico could identify more easily.

Ana Lucia tells about her character: “I admire her because she is a woman who fights, she does not let anyone or anything stop her in getting what she wants. It inspires me to have confidence and strive to get more work, and see who I connect with. She fights and  never surrenders … (in life) there are always obstacles, mental and physical, and as the public we live that too. ”

Chloe has a dark side, a side with which Ana Lucia does not identify herself and she had to explore in order to understand her character: “She will  not let herself be helped, she does not let herself be loved, she does not let people in on her life … She goes out with a guy and resists love. But it`s because of  what she has lived.

“I had to explore a darker side … the fear of abandonment, of love.  Chloe has always thought that she is alone in the world so she pushes away all those who want to help her. It was a very amazing learning  process and a very deep one because the character is different from me. I`m relaxed, but this  girl is earth and fire. It has only one direction.”

Although Ana Lucia is a born athlete, she had not had the opportunity to practice boxing in the past, but after  training she has become a fan of this sport.

“I want the people who see her to leave with the feeling that you can fight for what you want,  follow your dreams and follow your heart. That you  can leave every place you go with your fist in the air and say ‘I am going to be able to fulfil  my dreams  because I am the only factor  that I need… to triumph. That is what we need in our society. ”

This  play performs Monday at 8:45 p.m. at the Shakespeare Forum in the Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City.
