Alberto Puello retained his World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super lightweight belt by defeating Jesus Rubio by unanimous decision on Wednesday night in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The judges’ scorecards were 120-107, 120-107, and 120-107 with which the “Wasp” won an important victory in front of his people in the capital of Quisqueya and in a great event organized by Shuan Boxing.

The Dominican was in great shape during his second defense of the black and gold belt and dominated throughout the fight the brave Mexican, who went all out against the champion.

Rubio was up front at all times, even though he was technically outclassed by the local fighter. The Mexican showed his warrior’s heart and did not make the night easy for Puello, who had to work hard but showed the great preparation he did in Las Vegas with Cuban trainer Ismael Salas.

Puello used his upper well and knocked Rubio down in the first round to showcase his power. He worked the long-distance, combined well with his punches, and made it clear that he is up for big things and plans to fight in the United States in his next challenge.

The winner improved his undefeated record to 19 wins, with 10 knockouts. Rubio’s record dropped to 13 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw, and 7 knockouts.
