One of the most important announcements of the online press conference held by the president of the World Boxing Association (WBA), Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, on Thursday, was the creation of WBA-Brazil with the support of Acelino “Popo” Freitas, former world champion.
Freitas joined the organization a few months ago and from his position as Director of the Athletes Committee has contributed with many ideas. “Popo” is a social fighter in his country and his main goal is to help people.
With a few details yet to defined, Mendoza formally announced the creation of WBA-Brazil, a project that seeks the expansion of the WBA and the development of the sport in the South American country.
In addition to sanctioning championships in Brazil, the aim is to develop the discipline as a whole and to turn it into a major market with the support of local authorities and various institutions.
Over the next few months, as the project continues to take shape, further details will be provided as well as the progress that has been made.
