Jorge Masvidal blasts Leon Edwards after UFC on ESPN 4 callout

Leon Edwards may have put on the best performance of his career on Saturday night, but it still wasn’t enough to impress one of his biggest rivals.

Moments after Edwards capped off a convincing unanimous decision win over Rafael dos Anjos in the UFC on ESPN 4 main event with a call-out of top welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal, “Gamebred” put his Twitter fingers to work to belittle Edwards’s performance and dismiss the challenge.

So I can be clear I was promised a title shot after I beat askren and I plan on cashing in on it. Don’t call me out no more until I get that belt #supernecessary10.8K12:30 PM – Jul 21, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacy1,680 people are talking about this

“Big difference between putting top-ranked opponents to sleep and putting fans to sleep,” Masvidal wrote.

Masvidal and Edwards had a memorable run-in backstage at UFC London in May, an incident that saw Masvidal throw punches at Edwards spawning his now infamous “three-piece and a soda” catchphrase.

While Edwards currently owns the second-longest UFC winning streak at 170 pounds with eight straight victories, he only has two finishes during that stretch, a statistic that does not appear to impress Masvidal. In comparison, Masvidal, a fighter who historically has gone to the scorecards more often than not, has strung together a pair of sensational knockouts against former Bellator and ONE champion Ben Askren and recent UFC welterweight title challenger Darren Till.

Saturday’s comments are consistent with an ultimatum recently laid down by Masvidal and his management in regards to Masvidal only seeking to accept a fight with absentee star Conor McGregor or a title fight.

“So I can be clear, I was promised a title shot after I beat Askren and I plan on cashing in on it,” Masvidal wrote. “Don’t call me out no more until I get that belt.”
